Public spaces can be intimidating, terrifying and even dangerous for marginalised people. What historical and contemporary attitudes, behaviours and ideologies are represented and embedded within our built environment? We will consider the toponymy of streets, squares, statues and shop signs, and how they perpetuate colonial narratives of white supremacy and enslavement. What decolonial discursive tools and ways of being can help us navigate temporal moments and the physical places of rupture? This participatory performative walking tour will integrate protest aesthetics and communication design to take the form of a quasi-manifestation through the streets of Porto. We will start at Jardins do Palácio de Cristal, the location for the Primeira Exposição Colonial Portuguesa. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes as we will be on our feet for an hour and half as we meander to Cordoaria.
