Dinner debate on hospitality, humanism and democracy in the context of the war in Ukraine.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a serious attack on human life and democracies. The war has caused death and destruction in Ukraine, a humanitarian crisis and one of the largest refugee flows in Europe since the Second World War. According to the UN, there are now more than 3 million refugees. The attack revealed the enormous courage and resistance of the Ukrainian people, but also of many Russians who are demonstrating for peace.
Humanism, empathy and mobilisation for the human rights of the Ukrainians have taken on a universal dimension. It is part of a great humanist tradition that has had and still has some of its most influential voices in Eastern Europe, from Tolstoy to Svetlana Alexievich. The present debate is intended as an opportunity to make known the struggle of Ukrainians and Russians for freedom, democracy and peace, framing it within the debate on the imperative of a universalist hospitality.
